Caballos JerezJerez is the home of the Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, and is known all over the world thanks to its show entitled "How the Andalusian Horses Dance", a unique exhibition of horsemanship which both exhibits and summarises the work which the institution has carried out.

The visitor enters the Recreo de las Cadenas through the main gate: a semi-circular entrance with a small gatehouse on either side, decorated with the chains which give the property its name. Once through the main wrought iron gate, the visitor contemplates the beautiful gardens which stretch out before him as far as the Royal School Foundation itself, characterised by their great variety of exotic plants and standing amongst them the great fountain which adorns the centre of the gardens. There are daily guided tours which begin just outside the Palace, a beautiful example of 19th Century architecture designed by Charles Garnier (Paris Opera House and Montecarlo Casino amongst others).

Caballos JerezFrom this point we are guided into the 19th century through the history of the Pemartín family, the first owners of the Recreo de las Cadenas. Once we reach the stables, an octagonal complex made up of five stables each with twelve boxes, we can finally visit our famous horses.

Just in the centre of the stables is the tack room, made of wood, where they keep all the harnesses used for daily training and for the performances themselves. If you buy a joint ticket to visit the Royal School and the Horse Carriage Museum, located just behind the Royal School, you can now visit the museum and discover the wonderful world of driving thanks to a splendid collection of carriages and the very latest multimedia technology.

Yeguada la CartujaThe Cartuja Monastery has become an essential centre for the local horse breeding since it was founded at the end of the fifteenth century. Cartujan monks bred a herd of horses for three centuries which became one of the most famous and appreciated equine animals in the world. Due to the Independence War, the monks´ works were interrupted at the beginning of the nineteenth century . After the monks fled La Cartuja Monastery in 1810, the presbytery Pedro Jose Zapata saved the legendary herd from an irreparable break-up. He bought the best 60 mares and 3 horses and hid them in a territory in Cadiz Province called "La Breña del Agua". Such horses were the origin of what is currently known as the Cartuja - Hierro del Bocado Stud Farm. Bocado Branding iron was designed by Zapata so that animals coming from Cartuja Stud Farm could be branded. Cartuja horses have settled in a large piece of land called the Fuente del Suero. Besides, they form part of the national wealth as Spain takes care of the preservation of these unique horses.

You can visit The Stud Farm on Saturday at 11 o'clock where you will be taken round the installations by a guide who will give you a detailled explanation, and there is also a very beautiful show. After the show you will be invited to a glass of sherry and there is also the possibility of a ride on a horse and carriage.

The price ranges between 18 and 10 euros.
In order to buy tickets you must ring the Stud Farm at 956 162 809 (from 8.30 to 15,30)
